How The Adaptive Loop Works

The loop holds a set number of videos — fifteen, unless you have changed Videos in Adaptive Loop. A playlist you send fills those places first, and the kiosk fills whatever is left over by itself. Send a playlist of fifteen and there is nothing left for it to choose, which is working as intended rather than a fault.

A place is earned by shoppers scanning, and by nothing else. The kiosk counts the scans for each product and ranks them, so the more a product is scanned the more likely it is to appear. One scan is enough to be considered, unless you have raised Minimum Scans For Loop. A scan only counts if that kiosk already holds a video for the barcode — scans of products you have no video for do nothing here, and show up on the no-video list instead.

To fill the places left over, the kiosk works through three passes in this order, and stops as soon as they are full.

  1. The Last 24 Hours, Most Scanned First

What is being picked up today. This is the window Adaptive Loop Reset (Hours) sets.

  2. The Last Seven Days, Most Scanned First

Only for places the first pass could not fill. This is why one quiet afternoon does not throw away the products that sold all week — a strong seller keeps its place through a slow day.

  3. Anything Ever Scanned, Most Recent First

A last resort, so a store that has been closed for two weeks comes back to a full screen instead of a nearly empty one.

It draws on every video you have sent that kiosk, not only the ones in your playlist. Anything in the library you published can be promoted this way, which is the argument for publishing your whole catalog rather than only what you expect to play.

The list is rebuilt each time the loop reaches the end, so something scanned this morning can be on screen within minutes. Nothing is ever padded: if the three passes cannot fill the places, the kiosk plays fewer videos rather than putting up something nobody asked for.

To see what it has chosen, open the kiosk's page and read What Is Playing On This Screen. It is split three ways — Pushed Playlist for what you sent, Loop Made On The Kiosk for anything added at the screen itself, and Adaptive Loop for the kiosk's own picks. No Adaptive Loop heading at all means it has not chosen anything yet.

The settings behind all of this, and the reset, are on Video Loops under Adaptive Loop — see letting the kiosk choose.

Worth Knowing

  • The 24 hours is a rolling count, not a nightly wipe. A scan stops counting once it is a day old, and the seven-day pass is what holds a popular product in place meanwhile.
  • Empty places are correct. A short loop means few products were scanned, not a broken kiosk.
  • A new store's loop starts nearly empty and fills as people scan. Give it a day or two of scanning.
  • Reset To Factory Settings clears that kiosk's scan history, so the loop starts learning from nothing. It deletes no videos.
